COMMERCE - An impressive historic downtown with a collection of 19th and 20th century structures reflecting the charm captured by Olive Ann Burns in her novel, Cold Sassy Tree. Commerce is on the U.S. 441 Heritage Highway. Shopping, restaurants and a train track down the center of town take you back to a more relaxed era. Close to Home
HOMER - Incorporated as a town in 1859. This small rural town is located on Old U.S. Highway 441 and close to I-85. It has many historic structures; the historic courthouse built in 1863 and the historic Old Jail built c. 1880. Play golf at Chimney Oaks Golf Club, visit local potter at Turpin Pottery. The Narrows in Banks County is where Ty Cobb was born and not too far from town is Fort Hollingsworth, a circa 1792/1793 fort turned farmhouse in 1860. Though you can't get up close, stop for a sunset picture of the Blind Suzie Covered Bridge outside of town.
Novelty Fun
HELEN - The Alpine town of Helen takes its inspiration from the villages of Germany, complete with the building style of downtown shops and restaurants. But it's also in the heart of Northeast Georgia, offering travelers outdoor sports like tubing and hiking, along with wine tasting at the many vineyards nearby. The area has both Native American history and an arts community in nearby Sautee Nacoochee.
